Together with you, we will become the best at negative footprint!
Amarjit Sahota, founder and CEO of Ecoviva Inteligence, has almost 20 years of research and has a very extensive evidence-based knowledge of how the cosmetic industry is developing. The lecture I listened to was about how natural and organic products have developed on the world market over the past 15 years, and especially in Europe. There is no doubt that our small niche has gone from being a “trend product” to becoming an established and well-respected industry. The future for natural and organic products in cosmetics is expected to continue to grow strongly!
Product footprint - A product's impact on the environment from the time it is produced to the time it is discarded.
If you break down a product's life cycle, it looks like this: Raw material > Production > Distribution > Consumption > Waste. A natural/organic cosmetic product has a relatively low impact on the environment but is clearly overrepresented in one category - namely the consumption stage. That is - it is when you as a consumer have the product you bought at home and consume it. The consumption group accounts for a full 58% of the product's footprint. Some reasons why a product is costly from an environmental perspective are;
>You use too much of the product and need to buy a new one quickly.
> You buy a product that you are bad at using.
> You waste water when you shower - Get wet and then turn off the water and apply shampoo and body shower then rinse off again.
There is a tantalizing thought in how little responsibility each of us really needs to take in order to collectively save our future environment. Don't just state it - do it!
Mr. Sahota concluded his lecture by urging/challenging us producers to inspire our consumers to think about how we can bring down the relatively high figure of 58%. We at c/o Gerd intend to send a small “How to” as soon as someone buys a product that cleans. If you have any other ideas about what we could do to make you consumers more aware, please email me or write a comment below!
