Seasonal changes are something we are used to, but have you thought about how tired you can get? When summer turns to autumn, autumn to winter, winter to spring and spring to summer, many people find that they need more sleep, more time for recovery and time to catch up with themselves. My personal experience is that I can suffer from mood swings, irritation, fatigue and a little depression during these periods, so during my fifty-two years of life I have had plenty of opportunities to explore how I best take care of myself to meet each new season filled with joy and energy. My best tips now that autumn is knocking on the door (yes, I know it does, the elderberries start to ripen and when they have turned completely black, yes, then autumn is here) I will share with you here:
- Follow nature: go for a walk every day, preferably in the same place, and observe the changes. By following nature's transformation, it becomes easier to keep up and gradually embrace the new season. And you get your daily dose of daylight.
- Eat berries and wild vegetables – fill yourself with wild power from rose hips, blackberries, blueberries, green leaves and wild seeds. Nutrient-dense food lays the foundation for good health and I am absolutely convinced that if we eat a little wild every day, we will become more resilient.
- According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian healing tradition, this is the time of year that is best suited for a little heavier, hot cooked food. Lubricate the body from the inside with vegetable oils, ghee (clarified butter), root vegetables and hot cooked food (more on this in a later post).
- Nap! Naps are underrated! Taking a short nap in the afternoon, even if it's just for ten minutes with your head on the pillow, does wonders for your health. Yes, I hear you: "but I can't do it with my job. If I don't have time, I don't know where I would do it..." But it doesn't have to be every day. Do it when you can. Lock yourself in the toilet if nothing else! Maybe have a chat with your boss - is it possible to turn a meeting room into a rest room? The place where I rent office space has two such tiny rooms - there's only a bed in there. You can crawl into them when you need to get away and rest your body and head for a while. Instead of setting the clock, I usually rest until I start drooling - that's a good sign that I'm deeply relaxed! Then I can continue my day with renewed energy.
In future posts here you will get more tips on which wild plants and berries help and what Ayurveda recommends.
Have the best!
